EDITOR'S DESK

I was in Chennai, India, soon after Narendra Modi Government scapped the Rs 1000 and Rs 500 currency notes in what was hailed as a daring move of demonetisation on 8 November 2016.

As a result, most of the ATMs in the country did not function, and adding to Tamil Nadu’s woes in particular, were the death of chief minister J. Jayalalithaa on December 6 and the "vardah” cyclone a few days later, that brought Chennai to a complete standstill, as people did not have cash, there was no electricity at homes (more as a precautionary measure, power was cut as high-volt- life notwithstanding the age cables were dangling precariously), no wifi or internet connectivity, and of course paralysed road transport due to scarcity of petrol and inundated roads.

Any New Zealander cannot even imagine this type of life, probably even in the local prisons, though the writer has hadn’t had a comparable experience!

People suffered in probably all possible ways -- physically, mentally and financially, but many of them felt that demonetisation was a good move, and supported team Modi.
